Your First Tournament Experience!

Grand Champions in our 2015 KI Cup Tournament

So, this is your first tournament?

Everyone has a first tournament. We try, in Karate International, to make it a great experience. “Dojo Tournaments” as we call them, are smaller than the big open tournaments. Therefore, they cost less, and they get over with quicker!

We have printed a schedule for your divisions, based on your belt level. We try really hard to stick as close to it as possible, but you should plan to be here 30 minutes early, in case we get to your division early. That way, we can get the whole tournament over sooner if possible. We promise not to run your division, more than 30 minutes early.

You can don’t have to tell us which divisions you will enter, we will have your name and you can choose, the day of the tournament, which things you want to do. We will encourage you to do all of the options in your division, but you get to choose!

So, what are divisions and how do we choose?

Little Samurais – You will all line up according to your belt level. You will all do techniques at the same time, just like you were in class. We will group you according to your belt levels. Depending on who enters the tournament, these divisions may vary. After we do most of what you have learned in classes, we will award the trophies!

White Belt Kids, Teens or Adults – Your group will be divided by age, check the times for when you should show up. In each age group, you will be asked to perform as a group (just like in class) and you will be judged on the following divisions:

Blocks and Strikes

  • Upper Block, Downward Block, Middle Block, Outside Forearm Block
  • Forefist punch,  Knifehand Palm Up, Knifehand Palmdown, Vertical Backfist

Combinations Division

  • Defensive Combinations – Upper Block/punch, Upper Block/knifehand strike palm up, Upper Block/Knifehand strike palm down
  • Offensive Combinations From left left fighting stance, backfist, reverse punch

Kicks Division

  • From forward stance Front snap kick each side
  • From left Fighting stance, skip lead leg wheel kick
  • From left Fighting stance, spinning side kick

Each age group will be awarded trophies. Remember to kiai and listen carefully for what technique they want you to do.

Gold Belt Kids, Teens or Adults – Your group will be divided by age. You will line up just like in a a class and as a group you will do what the Judge call out. These are your divisions:

Defensive Combinations

  • Upper Block/punch,
  • Upper Block/knifehand strike palm up,
  • Upper Block/Knifehand strike palm down,
  • Upper Block/vertical backfist strike,
  • Upper Block/defensive front kick

Offensive Combinations

  • Backfist,
  • Reverse punch,
  • Skip lead leg wheel kick,
  • Back leg wheel kick,
  • Spinning side kick

Kata, Attack Form 1

If you have learned your Kata and would like to do that, you will by yourself, one at a time. rather than in a group, but the judges will help you learn how to introduce yourself at the beginning of your kata.

Green Tips and Deputy Green Belt Kids, Teens or Adults – Your group will be divided by age and size.

Kata

You can each compete in Kata. You should pick the Kata you like the best, if you know more than one. You will be asked to do it by yourself, but the judges will help you if you have questions.

You can also do Kicking Division

  • Front Snap kick,
  • Skip Lead Leg Wheel,
  • Back Leg Wheel,
  • Cross over Sidekick

Sparring Division

Most Green Stripes will not spar as they don’t have the experience and most have only had an Introduction to Sparring. Deputy Green Belts do have some sparring experience. If you are a Green Stripe and choose to spar, you may be combined with Deputy Green Belts. In this division, you will be paired up with one person and the judges will call points, and the first person to 3 points wins that match. You may have more than one match, depending on how many people are in your group. We will be preparing for this in classes two weeks before the tournament.

Green Belts, Brown tips and Deputy Brown Belts – Your group will be divided by age and size.

Kata Division

You should do the kata that you like the best, since you know more than one. You will be asked to do it by yourself, but the judges will help you if you have questions. In the case of a tie, you may repeat the same kata, but often times, a better score will come from doing a different kata.

Self Defense Division

You will be asked to perform 5 Self Defense Sets with a partner. If you have a friend that you practiced with, they can be your partner (or uke). If you don’t have a partner, we will assign one from your group.

Sparring Division

In this division, you will be paired up with one person and the judges will call points, and the first person to 3 points wins that match. You may have more than one match, depending on how many people are in your group. We will be preparing for this in classes two weeks before the tournament.

Brown Belts – Your group will be divided by rank, age and size. We try to keep the groups small.

Kata Division

Weapons Kata Division

Although most will only know Bo kata, you may do any weapons kata that you like if you know more than one. You will be asked to do it by yourself, but the judges will help you if you have questions.

Special Divisions for Any Belt Level

Musical Kata and Team Kata – Anyone, any belt level, can perform a musical kata or a team kata. In Musical Kata, you take one or more of the katas you already know and do them to a favorite song. Please make sure the song does not have any inappropriate language, as that would be a reason for disqualification. Also, remember, selecting music that the judges might actually enjoy, doesn’t hurt! Have a family member or friend ready with your device and the music. We will connect your device to our sound system. Musical Katas can have a weapon or be empty hand.

Team Kata is fun and easy to practice. All you have to do is pick one or more friends to do a Kata with you. You can all do it, exactly as you normally do Kata, just standing next to each other. You can mix it up a little by having one person face the front of the room and one face the back and do the Kata at the same time, heading in different directions. There have been many creative Team Katas in the past. Team Katas do not contain music and cannot contain a weapon. We will be allowing time in classes the week before the tournament, to let people practice Team Katas and Musical Katas.

Announcing your Kata – There is a standard “announcement” that you are expected to say in most divisions. Here it is, so you can practice. If you have any trouble with it the judges will help you through it. Dojo Tournaments are less formal than real tournaments.

Announcement:

  1. Judges, my name is (insert your name).
  2. My school is Karate International of (Apex, Raleigh or West Raleigh)
  3. My teacher is Mr. Olevsky (if you not from the Raleigh dojo, use your instructor’s name Mr. Houston for Apex and Mr. Weinberger for West Raleigh)
  4. My kata will be (insert the name of your kata).
  5. With your permission I will begin.

Good Luck in the tournament. And remember, we just want you to have fun!
