Brown and Black Belts

In general, students move from 3rd Brown to 2nd Brown in about 6 months with average training of 3 classes per week. Some take longer, some shorter, it is best just to ask Mr. Josh if you have any concerns.  The same is true from 2nd Brown to 1st Brown.  Once you reach 1st Brown, there is a mandatory 4 month wait to be awarded your Deputy Black Belt.  There is also a minimum of 32 classes before being awarded your Deputy Black Belt.  You can ask about it anytime after that, but it will be awarded when your instructors feel you are showing the spirit and attitude to begin preparations for Black Belt.  Students must be able to do 10 empty hand katas in a row without stopping to demonstrate the stamina for training for Black Belt.  You may or may not be asked to do this in a class.  If your instructor knows you are capable, they may not ask to see it.  If they are not sure you are ready, they will encourage you to work on your conditioning.  Once you start training for Black Belt, it can be anywhere from 6 months to a year of training to become a Black Belt.  Again, please check with Mr. Josh to help figure out all of your concerns.

Deputy Black Belt preparations

As you get closer to Black Belt, you will be asked to find someone to work with who can be your uke at your Black Belt test for Sparring and Self Defense.  If you need help forming a training relationship with another student, please see Mr. Josh and he will assist.  As a Deputy Black Belt you should attend at least 2 Promotion Ceremonies so you will know what to expect on your Black Belt test.

Black Belts

As Black Belts, we your training process has changed a bit.  We ask that you consider cross-training if you have not done this already.  Please try out some Judo, Jujitsu or Kendo classes so you can decide what appeals to you.  Also, your next promotion is roughly 2 years from when you were promoted to Black Belt.  In the first year after you make Black Belt, we like to see you training in Karate as well as another art, and start earning rank in another art.  In the 2nd year, you will join the Class of Black Belts that year who are working on promotion in November of that year at Black Belt Friday.  That is the time to focus more on Karate instead of doing as much cross training.  Once you are officially in the testing Class, you will receive a new class card with your next Black Belt degree testing requirements.  Until then, you will have a class card with Training Requirements.  You are not required to pass all training requirements, but it is a good guideline.  If you need any assistance, please see Mr. Josh.  If you are intersted in learning to teach, please also see Mr. Josh as he can help get you started in that.  But most of all, please attend the All Dojo Black Belt workout on Saturdays at 1:00 as often as possible.

At Brown Belt we recommend you purchase your new set of Sparring Gear if you have not done that in the past 6 months.  At this point, your sparring gear is most likely in poor condition and should be updated.  Please see Mr. Josh.
